"Art isn’t something you need an outside license or a paycheck to pursue. It’s a way of life. It’s a way of adding up what you feel and where you’ve been and what you fear and what you can imagine. It’s a way of seeing your life through a lens that makes everything — good and bad, confusing and clarifying, uplifting and depressing — valuable." - Heather Havrilesky, Ask Polly 11/28/18
I stumbled upon the Ask Polly column on The Cut.com a few months ago while sick with the flu and to say it blew my mind is an understatement.
The author Heather Havrilesky answers letters weekly under the name Polly and honestly, some of the topics she tackles are deep and thought-provoking.
In the column titled ‘I’m Broke and Mostly Friendless, and I’ve Wasted My Whole Life’, she advises 'Haunted', who has written in about how disappointed she is in her life, haunted by the things she had set out to accomplish in life but at the age of 35, feels she has accomplished nothing.
Haunted has moved many times to different cities, traveled, had relationships and jobs. She is currently unhappy with her current job and is at a point where she is tired. She has tons of debt, no friends, single and no children. And the kicker? She's a writer.
I said out loud to myself, "Am I reading something from myself?"
I used to be Haunted, literally and figuratively. In the past, I have said many times how I felt like I have not accomplished what I set out to do in my life. I'm now in my late 40's and never married or had children. I've always felt like I should have done so much at this point of my life. I was haunted by what I didn't do because it made me feel inadequate and at times, worthless.
But this is something that many of us feel. We base our timeline on our age.
We're told that by a certain age, we should have X amount of things done. We should be married. We should have children. We should go to college and/or be set in our careers by a certain age. I could go on. But guess what? Life almost never goes as planned.
"Shame is the opposite of art. When you live inside of your shame, everything you see is inadequate and embarrassing. A lifetime of traveling and having adventures and not being tethered to long-term commitments looks empty and pathetic and foolish, through the lens of shame. You haven’t found a partner. Your face is aging. Your body will only grow weaker. Your mind is less elastic. Your time is running out. Shame turns every emotion into the manifestation of some personality flaw, every casual choice into a giant mistake, every small blunder into a moral failure. Shame means that you’re damned and you’ve accomplished nothing and it’s all downhill from here."When I read that, I was completely mind-blown.
Shame. These feelings I have, they have a name. I never thought of how I was feeling as shame but it is. One of the mantras I live by is change your mindset, change your life. And the difference between living inside your shame versus looking at your shame with an open mind and heart is that you look at life through a different lens, which then determines how you live that life.
Polly goes on to tell Haunted how she can create a new life for herself by simply looking at her shame differently. By not being afraid to accept that while life is not perfect, it can still be wonderful.
"You need to discard some of this shame you’re carrying around all the time. But even if you can’t cast off your shame that quickly, through the lens of art, shame becomes valuable. When you’re curious about your shame instead of afraid of it, you can see the true texture of the day and the richness of the moment, with all of its flaws. You can run your hands along your own self-defeating edges until you get a splinter, and you can pull the splinter out and stare at it and consider it. When you face your shame with an open heart, you’re on a path to art, on a path to finding joy and misery and fear and hope in the folds of your day. Even as your job is slow and dull and pointless, even as your afternoons alone feel treacherous and daunting, you can train your eyes on the low-hanging clouds until a tiny bit of sunlight filters through. You are alive and you will probably be alive for many decades to come. The numbers on your credit-card statements can feel harrowing, but you can take that feeling and keep it company instead of letting it eat you alive. You can walk to the corner store to buy a newspaper and pull out the weekend calendar section and circle something, and make a commitment to do that one thing. You can build a new kind of existence, one that feels small and flawed and honest, but each day you accumulate a kind of treasure that doesn’t disappear. Because instead of running away from the truth, you welcome it in. You don’t treat what you have as pointless. You work with what you have."Havrilesky does an incredible job of issuing advice while being transparent on how she identifies with the person's feelings, including admitting her own flaws. This makes her a real person and not just someone writing a column for a major website who also has a book out. Everyone, even someone like Oprah, has their struggles.
We always tend to look at the end result instead of the journey, when looking at people. So it's easy to compare our lives to theirs and feel some kind of way about their success in comparison to ours.
"When you carry around a suspicion that there’s something sort of embarrassing or pathetic about you, you find ways to project that shame onto completely innocuous things. You find ways to tell yourself that everyone is laughing at you behind your back somewhere, possibly at a party where they are serving beautiful tasty drinks but you weren’t invited. You’re too old now. You’re no longer exciting or important. You don’t matter. You never really did. Shame creates imaginary worlds inside your head. This haunted house you’re creating is forged from your shame. No one else can see it, so you keep trying to describe it to them. You find ways to say, “You don’t want any part of this mess. I’m mediocre, aging rapidly, and poor. Do yourself a favor and leave me behind.” You want to be left behind, though. That way, no one bears witness to what you’ve become. It’s time to come out of hiding. It’s time to step into the light and be seen, shame and wrinkles and failures and fears and all."That last line! I'm done!
This year, my mission is to step into my power. I want to show up more for myself and others. I want to put myself out there more with positive intentions. I want to walk in a room with a positive attitude and be open to what awaits.
Does it scare the shit out of me? Hell yes. But if I am to live out this life of mine as fully as I can, I have to let go of my shame, my past (including past negative stories I told myself) and being afraid of the unknown.
This year has already kicked off amazingly and I keep thinking of my niece. She now watches over me, along with my dad and brother. And I can hear her voice in my ear, saying "Auntie, you got this!"
Typing that out makes the tears flow because she's only been gone 7 months. But as I learned when I lost my dad and then my brother, time does not stand still. Grief is painful but in order to live and keep moving, I have to learn how to carry that pain with me and channel it into something positive.
Honoring their legacy and continuing her work is what drives me. I'm going to be 50 next year but you know what? It's never too late to do whatever is on my life's to-do list. Gray hairs, pre-menopause and all. No wrinkles yet but I am not complaining! LOL!
Here's to living my best life and you living yours at any age. xoxo

| Hey, I'm over 40! **gasps** |
I was watching The Ellen Degeneres Show this week and she talked about how her age is always stated when she is mentioned in the media. And she wondered why the media felt the need to always mention her age instead of her accolades and achievements.
Hell, why not mention her job title or even her eye color? Nope, just her age. And for the record, she is 60, to which I was shocked to learn. She looks damn good.
I also noticed that when I typed in her name on Google, the first suggested search that came up was "Ellen Degeneres age" above her name.
Actress Julia Roberts, Ellen's guest during this show, also expressed her annoyance with news outlets front-loading their stories with a celebrity’s age. It rarely happens with younger folks or even older men. Julia is 51.
So why is a woman's age such a big deal?
Peep this.
- Suzanne Collins was 46 when she wrote "The Hunger Games".
- E. L. James was 46 when she wrote "Fifty Shades of Grey".
- Iris Apfel is a major fashion icon at age 97, having been the face of Australian brand Blue Illusion at age 94 and was a visiting professor at University of Texas at Austin at the age of 90.
- Ann Dowd earned her first Primetime Emmy Award nomination at the age of 61 for her role as Aunt Lydia on Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale.
Now I ask again, why is a woman's age such a big deal?
I recently saw Ann Dowd speak at Glamour's Women of the Year Summit and was in awe. It was that day that I decided I wasn't going to hide my own age anymore and not be too hard on myself for not getting everything I wanted accomplished by a certain age.
She spoke about getting her big break late in life (in her 50's) and how she learned to create her own timeline. We are fed this notion that we have to do all these things before a certain age because God forbid we do some amazing shit when we're "old".
![]() |
| Me doing some amazing shit at the age of 47 |
What is "old" exactly? Just like size, age is often judged by its number and we are more than a number.
Getting back to me (yes, I was deflecting cause I fully admit this is hard)... My name is Marcy and I am 48 years old.
Yep, I'll be 50 in two years and I have been struggling with that BIG TIME. 50 seems like such a major milestone where you are now crossing over from young to old. It's that median mark where now you're like, damn, I am a half century old.
I don't feel 50. I mean, what is 50 supposed to feel like? Or look like?
I see other women who are my age or around my age and some look much older than me and some don't. I am blessed to not look my age and still get the dropped jaws when I tell people how old I am. So for me, it feels weird to get older because time seems to be flying yet I feel like I am standing still. Does that make sense?
I've also encountered ageism in the sense where I have been told I shouldn't do this or that, shouldn't wear this or that, and etc. I just want to know who created these rules and why should we follow them?
So many questions and no answers. But I have learned that the answers to these questions are subjective. WE ARE WHO WE ARE. WE FEEL WHAT WE FEEL. And age should not have anything to do with that.
Sure, from a physical standpoint, things are changing. I have menopause to look forward to (NOT). I'm now wearing reading classes because after spending most of my life with almost perfect sight, I am now far-sighted. I suffer from arthritis and now have to get extra tests at the doctor to check for illnesses that happen after a certain age.
However, from a mental perspective, while I feel like I am wiser and more self aware, I still feel youthful and free. I still feel like I can conquer the world and I admit I still love to get on a swing at the park or run around freely in an open space. Plus, I still have my hot mess moments where I sometimes question what the hell am I doing.
The notion that you have your life together when you're a certain age is BS. Life is a journey where you are always figuring things out. I think as long as you are open to the possibilities and have committed to nourishing your relationship with yourself, it's okay to not have it together.
Nothing is perfect and your age should not be some indicator of life and where you should be. Self love is a lifelong journey that never stops and it shouldn't. The relationship you have with yourself is the most important one you will have in your life.
So I remind myself daily of what Ann Dowd said on that stage...
Keep the love story alive; the love of what you do. Celebrate the small wins. Stay humble and grateful for every single day and everything that happens in that day. It will suit you and support you. Always remember the answer is within you because your heart and soul are your compass to life. Don't obsess on the How. Just remind yourself in the mirror that you are in charge of who you are.
Yes, I am 48 but that doesn't define who I am by a long shot. Get ready 2019! I am fully prepared to do some more amazing shit going into Year 49.
And maybe I should start thinking about what I will do to usher in Year 50. Turning a half century old is kind of cool, when you think about it.

"There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered." ~ Nelson Mandela
This weekend, I was forced to really dive into my bedroom and closet. Besides me getting a new bedroom set, I'm also planning a closet sale in May and taking some trips. And my clothing (and shoes!) situation is starting to get out of control.
I say "forced" because for me, I tend to form an emotional attachment to things so it's hard for me to purge. But I don't know... I am in a different place and wasn't so anxious about purging this time around.
My 15-yr-old niece Savana was helping me go through stuff and as I went through my clothes and shoes, I realized that I was seeing the "old" me in these things. And it made me realize how much I have grown in the past few years.
I used to hate showing my upper arms. So I had a collection of shrugs in every color and print. I also own so many blazers when honestly, I am not a blazer girl. I'm more of a moto jacket/cropped jacket girl. However, back then, I wore shrugs and long blazers to cover my arms, stomach and butt. Those shrugs and blazers went in the "donate" bag along with those ridiculous fears I once had about showing parts of my body.
I had tons of maxi dresses and long skirts because I did not like to show off my legs either. And let's not even discuss how I always hid my stomach with long tops. They also went in the Donate bag.
I also saw how my style has evolved in those clothes that I held onto. I bought so many things that were not my style but I wore because I was trying to fit in or be like everyone else. I also found jeans that were two sizes larger than I am as well as baggy tops and sweaters. In the Donate bag they go!
It was as if the road to my true confidence and love for myself was laid out in those bags on the floor of my bedroom. Each piece told a story, some not-so-good ones. My niece sat there with me as I told her some stories and how I built my confidence over time. I told her how I now love my arms and show them off all the time. I haven't worn a shrug in almost three years, since my brother's (her dad's) funeral.
So much has changed since then. Grief forced me to reevaluate my life. When I started this journey of healing myself, I had no idea where it would take me. I look back now and don't even recognize the girl I once was. While I was smart, competent, pretty, caring, genuine and amazing back then, I did not know my own greatness. My lack of self-worth, confidence and self acceptance didn't allow me to be the best person I could be because I did not believe in myself.
I will never blame my size or my grief or any other outer force for me not being totally in love with myself and living fully. I take the full blame because at the end of the day, I have a choice in how I live.
I ended up giving away four bags of stuff and putting away two bags for my closet sale. I threw out so many things too! Usually, when I purge, I'm in tears at the end and mourning the loss. However, this time, no tears. I felt like a large weight had been lifted off of me.
The clothes and shoes I kept are truly me. My style, my rules and my life. I never knew I could be this happy -- I still have bad days but now I know, bad days do not equal a bad life. I just have to roll with the punches and live life as best as I can.
"Clothes aren’t going to change the world, the women who wear them will." ~ Anne Klein
Fashion. Style. Attitude.
Those three things are so interchangeable despite each having its own impactful definition. Fashion can determine your style but your style influences what fashion you choose to wear. And your attitude can change according to what you wear and if you are staying true to your style.
Last time, I talked about changing it up for the new year and evolving my style. It's not easy staying true to yourself while evolving your style because those old "rules" and things you told yourself you would never do, creep back into your head. Those little pesky negative thoughts can limit you, if you let them.
I'm at a point in my life where I want to explore life and change the world the way I am meant to and part of that is exploring my style and dealing with the limits I have put on myself because of what was told to me was flattering and such. I believe we all have a purpose in this world but when you limit yourself in any way, you are not fulfilling that purpose fully.
For me, I'll admit I am not a heels girl. I have flat feet so heels are not comfortable for me. But I also admit that I like how heels elongate my legs and gives me a sexy, more mature vibe. I will always love my wacky print flats and sneakers but with evolution, there is always room to add new things to the mix while still staying true to my style.
When I first saw this Illusive Fringe Dress from Catherines, I fell in love. It's blue, it's a print AND it has fringe at the sleeve hems. It's fun while still being chic and fabulous, which is my style all the way. BUT... it is a bit short by my standards and I am still working on feeling comfortable showing off my legs. So to help with that, I decided to wear my Circle Stud Heels also from Catherines and what a difference that made!
I decided to wear my beloved Obi Belt from Lane Bryant to show off my waist, which I think is one of my best assets. And since the dress was a print, I took a chance and went without accessories. And that paid off because I think I look amazing and my attitude in these images are everything - I look happy, confidence and poised.
Want to know a secret? I AM NOT WEARING SHAPEWEAR AT ALL. Yes! It was totally by accident -- I was in a rush to get out the house and take pics and could not find my girdle. So I threw caution to the wind and went without.
And these images are not photoshopped to hide my lumps and bumps because honestly, I wouldn't even know how to do something fancy like that. And why would I? This is me and I am not ashamed. But that also goes to show you how fabulous this dress is because it magically is not showing much of my belly rolls. The fabric is soft and stretchy. This dress is comfortable (for the record, I am 5'7" in terms of length).
I did try to change it up after taking these pics by adding a silver necklace and silver metallic flats to see how it would look. I think the dress still looks great so it passes my three-way style test.
I also love how on the Catherines website, the model paired this dress with black leggings and booties. Yet another way to wear this dress all year round. I love it when I can take an item and wear it in so many ways. When you wear what you love, it definitely ups your positive attitude.
Fashion Note: this dress goes up to a size 4X and is also available in petites. I'm wearing a size 3X and I am usually a size 26/28.
What do you think of my look? And are you evolving your style in 2016 as well? I'd love to hear about it! Let me know below!
Please note: While this is a sponsored post, all opinions are my own.
"Hope for love, pray for love, wish for love, dream for love…but don’t put your life on hold waiting for love." ~ Mandy Hale, The Single Woman: Life, Love, and a Dash of Sass
This year I started putting myself out there on the dating scene after taking a break to take care of myself during my grieving. And let me tell you, dating is not easy, especially when you're looking for a relationship after 40.
![]() |
| This is me on a daily basis when it comes to dating |
I've been single for about two years and decided I was ready to jump back into the dating pool. I started putting myself out there more and decided that this time I would do things differently.
I have spent years, one failed relationship after another, not really knowing why things never ended well. And after losing my dad and brother and going into therapy for bereavement counseling, I actually learned more than I thought I would.
I became more self-aware and more accountable for my choices in life. I realized that I wanted love so badly that I settled. And I stayed with men that I should have left as soon as I saw the first red flag. From cheating to being stood up all the time to even owing me money, these are the men I ALLOWED into my life. And if my ex is reading this, I still want my $150 back. I'm still working on letting that go because I know I will never see that money.
Sure, they were jerks BUT I chose to be with them. And we NEVER have to be with someone who doesn't treat us as we want to be treated. I learned that I always have a choice. Making those choices may not seem easy but when you get to a point in your life where you know you're worthy of a great partner and deserve that, choosing who you want to be with becomes very easy.
When you're secure with yourself and are not trying to be with someone just because you're lonely or afraid of being alone for life, you make better choices in who you choose to be with. Because you will not stand or settle for any less.
I'm fine with being alone. I don't NEED to be with someone. However, I WANT to be with someone. I want to share my life with someone. I even still have hope I will have a biological child. Some people think I am crazy since I am 45 but I believe anything is possible. I do plan to adopt as well but having my own child has been a dream in my heart since I was a teenager.
I always thought I'd be married with a couple of kids by now. And for a very long time, as the years sped by, I started to feel like a failure. My dad never got to walk me down the aisle or see his future grandchildren. And I sometimes feel like I am the only one who is single in my world.
But in therapy, I learned that acceptance is key. Everything happens for a reason. I've had a pretty good life despite the failed relationships and no husband and kids. I've traveled the world. I've seen amazing things. Honestly, I look back and know I could not do a fraction of those things if I was married with kids. This I know now and I had to be honest with myself. We don't always stay on the path we start on and we have to go with the flow and just remain hopeful.
I went back on the online dating scene six months ago and it's been okay. I've met some nice guys and some not so nice guys. However, instead of meeting my soulmate, I instead continue to learn more about myself and how I deal with men. I've learned that sometimes being too honest upfront is a bit much for men. I also learned that words mean nothing when it comes to actions. Someone can tell you everything you want to hear but if they don't make time for you or show interest, they are not interested.
I put a lot of value into words and sought that validation that comes from words. Sure, it's nice to hear how beautiful you are or how much someone is into you, but I realized that I was hearing more words than seeing actions. And after a while, words are not enough. You want to see action and thoughtful gestures, which if a person is really into you, no gesture is too grand.
I learned to not stand still and give too much of my time away when a guy is not interested. Just because I like him does not guarantee that he will like me back. And I have to accept that. Me getting frustrated or feeling hurt over a guy not being interested is a waste of negative energy. I just accept it and move on. No hard feelings. It just wasn't meant to be.
That was a MAJOR change for me because I was that girl that would be so frustrated and upset when a guy I liked didn't like me back. And I spent a lot of time in my feelings, having a pity party and refusing to accept it. Meanwhile, he has moved on to the next girl who he does like.
Sure, I've been disappointed but it's beyond my control so all I can do is put myself first and keep it moving. Rejection is part of life. At least I gave it a chance to see what would happen.
I also learned that I don't need to try too hard or chase a guy or even jump through hoops to prove myself to him. All I have to be is myself, because I think I'm pretty awesome, lol. And know my worth enough to know that I am a good woman and any man would be lucky to have me. The right man will see me and accept me for who I am.
I recently met someone who I think is amazing - not perfect but such a nice guy. Who knows what will happen? What I do know is that my life goes on no matter what. Life never stands still so I won't. I will still enjoy all the moments I can, whether I am single or not. Because we never know when it's our time to go so I don't want to waste or lose a single minute. It's like what Mandy said in the above quote... I will never put my life on hold to wait on love. Hell no.
All I want is to be loved by a good man who's honest, loyal, funny, humble and romantic, preferably in the tri-state area (lol). Now I have other attributes I look for but at the same time, I have come to accept that I will never find the perfect man. But if I can find someone who has most of the qualities I am looking for, that's good enough for me.
So for now, I will put myself out there, hitting my favorite spots, traveling, interacting with the world and still checking out my options online. We'll see what happens. I have a feeling my Mr Right will show up when I least expect it. I just hope my hair looks good when that happens.
I'm a summer baby. My birthday is August 19 and August is usually hot and humid where I am. The irony of that is I HATE THE SUMMER. Ugh.
I dread the summer because I don't like to be hot, red-faced and sweaty. It is not a good look AT ALL.
But in the last year since my brother died, I have been undergoing a major transformation of self. I'm grieving but also reevaluating my life and how I live it. Time is precious and I want to enjoy every second of it. Life is not perfect but it can be an adventure, if you want it to be.
I live in a beach town so summer is an exciting time when tourists descend on our little place in the world, fighting for the perfect beach spot. Sure, it can be annoying with all the crowded buses/trains and not being able to eat a slice of pizza in peace with so many people there. I can't even visit my favorite coffee spot in peace. But I will admit, the energy is incredible. People look so happy and free. And I decided that this year, I will grin and bear it because the positives outweigh the negatives. Why not feed on that energy and use it to my advantage?
So I am challenging myself this summer to accomplish some things and enjoy the summer, even though I'm sure I will be suffering in silence, lol.
One thing I want to do this summer is wear more white. I have not worn white pants since high school and that was about 25 years ago. White has always been my fashion enemy. I have it burned in my brain that white will make me look fatter and I don't want to look like a marshmellow on the street.
The weather has been wonky this year. Last week, it was in the 50s and today, it's 85 degrees. I decided to conquer this fear of white in baby steps. Enter the "white jacket"....
Summertime is definitely in the air and I don't mind it at all, for a change.
You can buy this moto jacket at Lane Bryant here.

Y'all know I love me some moto jackets and so of course, I had to have this white moto jacket from Lane Bryant. I was iffy on it at first but once I put it on, I realized I was really digging it. I didn't melt or burst into flames so that's a good sign. And I did not look like a marshmellow. Hmmm...
I probably won't get to wear this jacket much right now as summer appears to be well on its way quickly. And this jacket is a ponte knit so it's a little heavier than I'd like for any temps above 60 degs. But this is a jacket that can be worn season to season and never go out of style. Those are the true investment pieces.
As we speak, I am looking for a nice pair of white cropped denim jeans and shorts. And I am determined to wear them this summer. I'm deprogramming myself about white by subtly adding white pieces to my wardrobe that have hints of color (like the Lela Rose watercolor dress and top from Lane Bryant that I blogged about here) and once I am comfortable, I will do all white.
It's all about baby steps and challenging yourself to go outside your fashion box while staying true to your style. My dad used to always say that if you try to do something, it doesn't matter if you fail or not because at least, you tried. And you can always keep trying until you get it right.
Summertime is definitely in the air and I don't mind it at all, for a change.

“Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.” ~ Gwyneth Paltrow
I have my body issues just like the next woman. I love myself, don't get me wrong. But there are parts of me that I have a love/hate relationship with. One of those parts are my upper arms, which I call my "wings". I never bare my arms in public because I don't feel comfortable with showing my wings to the world.
But while shopping with a friend, I had a moment, which now has me on another road in my life's journey... to acceptance. I was in the dressing room, talking about how this was showing and that was showing. And my friend simply said:
"Hey, that's your body. You have to own it all. Those parts you don't like aren't going to disappear in a split second."
And after thinking about that, I realized that I was the one making those body parts an issue. Not anyone else. I'm not there 100% but I am getting there one day at a time. It's all about having a love affair with yourself.
Part of that love affair is dressing up your body and feeling good in what you're wearing. Staying true to your style because your style is who you are. We shouldn't dress to cover body parts we don't like or for any other reason than loving what you're wearing because when you look good, you feel good.
So when that friend was taking pics of me in my new maxi dress that I found at Catherines, I decided to bare my arms in order to show the full detail of the dress. I felt so pretty that I thought, what the hell! I did wear a cropped jacket for some pics but thought it would look even better if I showed the dress without the jacket.
This dress is amazing in so many ways. It's my favorite piece at the moment. I love stripes and the chevron stripe is so flattering. I also have a nice waist so the colorblock detail at the waist really shows that off, which I LOVE. The fabric is lightweight and stretchy. The dress flows nicely and feels so comfortable. Lastly, the length is perfect. I'm 5'7" so sometimes a maxi dress is too long or too short.
I also added a simple necklace, black purse and teardrop earrings.
For a pop of color (which I am always a fan of), I paired this dress with my pink patent leather flats from Lane Bryant.
I also love the versatility of this dress because I can also dress it down with a denim jacket and some sandals for a day look. This dress is so far the best item I have purchased this year yet. I will probably wear this dress over and over again.
You can shop my look here:

As spring comes into full swing, I'm starting to think baring arms was not so bad. My wings are beautiful because I AM BEAUTIFUL. I'm really inspired to keep conquering these little things that hold me back from living life to my fullest potential. And everytime I think of this dress, this song pops in my head (hence the title of this post). Fashion has had a hand in building my confidence and helping me realize that beauty is not about a size tag. It's about just being you. So thanks for "saving" my life.
“Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” ~ Bill Cunningham
Fall is one of my favorite seasons. It represents change and transition to me. It's a great season to recharge and reflect, in preparation of Spring, which to me represents renewal.
The summer was tough for me with my brother passing away on May 30 so I spent much of the summer, just trying to deal with my grief and trying to be somewhat upbeat. The love affair that I was having with myself came to a halt and honestly, it was hard to just leave the house.
With the arrival of Fall, it was a welcome change that made me happy and hopeful for the future. My grief and pain still remain but fashion has a way of lifting your spirits, especially if you are wearing something you love. Even if it's a pair of jeans and sneakers. When you wear something you love, it shows. For me, Fall days = Happy days.
I love wearing jackets, boots and denim and Fall is all about that. I love leopard print everything and to me, Fall is the perfect season for leopard print, even though leopard print pieces are one of those fashion staples that are seasonless.
I attended a luncheon for OneStopPlus on my birthday, of all days (August 19) and attendees were asked to take part in a style challenge. All we had to do was go to the racks of clothes that OSP set up and create an outfit. Of course, I gravitated to the leopard print wrap dress and then saw a denim moto jacket that I thought would look perfect with it. After the challenge, OSP surprised us by saying they would send us the outfit we created. YES! I didn't own a leopard print dress so I was so happy. Happy birthday to me!
This outfit screams Fall to me. I love denim and I love moto jackets so I was excited to now own a denim moto jacket. I have never been a fan of wrap dresses but this one is a faux wrap so I don't stress about it coming undone and me having an "accident". You tie a wrap dress wrong and you're in trouble.
I wanted to go simple with accessories since the dress can stand on its own. So I just paired the dress and jacket with some black boots (also from OSP), some simple hoop earrings, my usual everyday bracelets and my Thick Chick necklace.

The jacket has some stretch to it and fit well. My only gripe is that the sleeves are kind of long. I folded them in a bit to make them shorter. They're hard to alter since there's a zipper at the end of the sleeves. I have average arms so this was strange to me. I also have large upper arms and the sleeves fit well, which I was so happy about. That is my main issue when shopping for jackets.
I love the length of the dress. It falls below the knee, not quite mid-calf. I think that length works for this dress especially if you want to wear boots with it and wear it in the colder months. I've worn this dress twice already this season and love it. It has stretch and the fabric is lightweight and flows nicely with you. It's comfortable. The tie belt is a bit long, even after tying it up but that can be fixed with some scissors and a little hand stitch at the bottom of it.
With Fall here, I am feeling happier. It's something about the crisp air, fall foliage and the change of seasons that calms me. Fashion has definitely lifted my spirits and helped me get back into this love affair with myself. Wearing things I love makes me want to get out there and conquer the world so if a simple jacket or leopard dress can do that, I am all for that. Life is short and we have to enjoy the moments but to do that, you have to put yourself out into the world. Why not do that and be fashionable and comfortable? When you're happy, it shows and happiness is contagious. So wear what you love this season and live! That's my mantra this Fall and beyond.
