"Autumn... the year's last, loveliest smile." ~ William Cullen Bryant
Fall is my favorite season. The brisk wind, the leaves changing colors, the cool weather and its prelude to winter. it's that season that you know you must enjoy before it goes all in the crapper and winter arrives. Ugh.
I live in New York where we get 4 seasons and I live near the beach so winters are brutal. You get off the train and literally feel like the wind has slapped the crap out of you. You walk up a block and it takes you 20 minutes because you're fighting with the wind and trying to breathe. Sure, snow is pretty but trust me, that cuteness wears off very quickly.
So I try to enjoy Fall to the fullest. I'm not hot and sweaty. I can rock jackets, sweaters and boots. My hair looks great because there's no humidity. Fan-freaking-tastic!!!!
I also love leopard print and you see it the most in the Fall, or that's how it seems to me. So when I spied this top from Avenue, I had to have it. And it was right on time for Fall.
Photobombed by a duck, lol |
It's part of their new Hatchi knit collection, which has tops, dresses, skirts and cardis that come in this fabulous knit fabric. It has stretch and feels lightweight BUT still keeps you warm when it's brisk out. This top has a sharkbite hem and I love the length and how it falls.
I paired the top with a black ponte knit moto jacket from Lane Bryant, jeans from Catherines, booties from Lane Bryant and this fabulous patent leather bag from Fashion to Figure.
This is a casual chic look that I usually wear when I am out and about running errands or hanging out with friends at lunch. The top is comfy and being comfortable but cute is always key for me.
My jeans are slightly baggy - I need to size down and get another pair. But I loved this image so much that I decided to use it anyway, even though it's not perfect. Because at the end of the day, none of us are perfect.
I had an audience while taking pics, lol |
This top is a definite must-have if you're looking for a knit top in leopard print that you can wear with jeans or even some faux leather leggings and a blazer. It can be dressed up or down and styled in many ways. I can't wait to pair this with my leather jacket and faux leather skirt with some tall boots. Or some medium washed jeans, booties and a brown jacket.
Avenue has some great pieces this Fall and that excites me so much. As someone who has been a customer of theirs for decades, they have been a lifesaver when I was a size 32/34 and still continue to feed my fashion wants at a size 26. With so many retailers stopping at a size 24 or 3X, it's those retailers like Avenue that have shown that they have not forgotten those women above a size 24. So thank you Avenue!
As the weather gets colder, I am starting to wear more hoodies. Check back on the blog for my write-up on a hoodie from Avenue's new Yummy Fleece collection. And I also just noticed this hoodie from their Hatchi knit collection that will be mine ASAP. This has my name written all over it - I mean, it says DREAM on the front! Yessss!

"Oh, never mind the fashion. When one has a style of one's own, it is always 20 times better." ~ Margaret Oliphant
I've loved camo since I was a kid. I don't know why but it just called to me. But back then, camo was more masculine and I like a feminine touch to my looks. But that didn't stop me from wearing camo tees I scored at the Army surplus store tied with a knot to the side over my cargo pants and Doc Martens. Add some huge hoop earrings, a cat eye and some red lipstick and off I went. That was my signature look in college and to say I stood out among the sea of students, is an understatement.
So imagine my excitement when I found out camo was back as a fashion trend and was being paired with sequins, used in dresses and being femmed up in jackets and tops. I was Snoopy dancing for days!
And of course, Lane Bryant fed my fashion wants by offering a few camo pieces. There was a jacket I had my eye on but it sold out fast. But I did manage to score a pleated midi dress and a tee that was so dope that it is one of my favorites this fall. It says "Lipstick Diamonds Champagne" on the front and has a nice v-neck. (The tee has since sold out as well)
I wore the tee during New York Fashion Week last month and learned that red goes well when paired with camo. My red jacket and red shoes are from Lane Bryant as well. I had no idea! See, this is why it is so important to mix different colors and play around with pieces to create different looks.

The pleated midi dress was another story. It hung on the outside of my closet where I stared at it daily. I wanted to wear it but I am always scared to wear flowy dresses because I always think they make me look bigger. And it brings back memories of being a teen and hearing how I should not wear certain things because it will make me look bigger.
Fast forward to this week... Lane Bryant invited me to their Spring 2016 Preview event and I felt like it would be great to wear something from them to the event. That's when I decided to wear the dress, pairing it with my green peplum jacket and boots from them as well. I decided to have a fearless fashion moment and I am so happy I did!
The pleats actually make my body look longer and not wider!!! Yes!
I just bought these boots in-store at Lane Bryant a week ago and I have to admit that the boots were the driving force to me finally being brave enough to wear this dress. I was so excited to find a pair of tall boots that fit my 22" calves. So I wanted to wear them as soon as possible.
I'm wearing a size 26 in the dress and it fits me slightly big on top so I could have sized down to a size 24. For reference, my measurements are 51-49-61.
I bought the boots in a size 9WW and as I stated above, my calf width is 22". The jacket is a size 26/28.
Here's some images from the Lane Bryant Spring 2016 Preview event... I'm loving the vibrant colors they're using. I'm not a fan of yellow because it washes me out but if you can pull it off, LB is going to be having some amazing pieces. The two models below (Emma Sanders and Precious Lee) are wearing two looks from the new collection:

"Dress like you're embracing life, not hiding from it." ~ Peter MorrisseyI continue to learn more about myself as I get older. After my brother died last year, I have been in therapy and while I initially went to help with the grief, it has turned out to be this incredible thing where I am learning more about myself and making changes that have helped me be more comfortable in who I am. This rings true when it comes to my style.
I lost my way for a bit because my confidence wasn't at a high point where I felt comfortable enough to truly be me when it comes to fashion. And now with getting older, I am also trying to stay true to my style while dressing for my age. I know some people will say that I should dress how I want but at 45 years old, I'm not a kid anymore and I feel I have to set an example for my nieces, my goddaughter and my younger family members.
So no more F**K you graphic tees or brass knuckles as a fashion accessory. I still rock with my handcuff print handbag that I have had for about 15 years but I think I can get away with that, lol. And I will always love my graphic tees, sneakers and tulle skirts. But as I have gotten older, I have wanted to still keep my style but add some class, maturity and femininity to it while keeping my edge. I also realized that I didn't wear a lot of things because of how critical I was of my body and showing parts of it. At this point of my life, I want to live limitlessly where my fear doesn't stop me from trying new styles.
I don't really like body con dresses or dresses above the knee. I don't know why but I have not felt comfortable in them. When I was a teen and in my 20's, I wore body con dresses and above-the-knee skirts and dresses. But somewhere in my 30's, my confidence took a hit and so did my style. I wore a lot of black and dark colors. B-O-R-R-R-I-N-G! And I am so NOT boring.
So a few months ago, when I attended an event for fullbeauty's Fall 2015 Preview. Designer and TV personality Cherie Christmas was there, wearing this beautiful blue print wrap dress from her new collection with the brand, I was in love! And at first thought, I assumed I could not pull it off. She begged to differ and told me she would make sure I had it when it became available.

Me with Cherie Christmas -- My entire look is from Simply Be except the shoes (from Lane Bryant) and Audrey Hepburn necklace (a gift) |
Fast forward two months later, the coveted blue print wrap dress arrives and WOW! I am more in love with it.
I paired the dress with my blue patent flats from Lane Bryant, a neon green clutch that I borrowed from a friend and a gold necklace and hoops that I have had forever but never worn.
I took Cherie's advice and sized down to a 22/24, so the dress fit me like a second skin but it was comfy and looked great. The color is amazing and it made me feel so good that I had fun taking these pictures while visiting Philadelphia.
I love how it shows off my body and curves but still has a chicness element to it. And I love the color - it just pops! This is a dress that you will definitely get noticed in -- in a good way!
If you haven't checked out Cherie's collection at fullbeauty.com, you definitely should. The necklace, bag and chain belt below are also from her collection. And get this... that chain belt is actually a bag strap!!! Yes! It comes with a smaller quilted black bag that has a smaller strap. The chain strap makes the bag convertible. You can wear the bag as a clutch, a shoulder purse or a crossbody. The chain belt can be worn as a belt, a necklace or a bracelet.
And as you can see, the chain belt fit me with plenty of chain to spare. My waist is 49" and I wear a size 26, for reference.
The bag with the chain belt is called the The Cherie Glam Clutch and you can check it out here. It comes in gold too and it's on my must-buy list.
I have my eye on the black tote (above) that was so wonderful and the perfect size. That's going to be my next purchase. You can check out the Cherie Tote Bag here.
These are a few other looks I have my eye on from fullbeauty (see above). The black top and print pant on the left is from Cherie's collection as well. You can't go wrong with a print pant. And the dress on the right is from Roaman's (click here). Love!
All in all, I love the collection. Cherie really pays attention to detail and is open to feedback. She is all about fit and making clothing that will have women feeling great when they wear her pieces. And being that I am above a size 22, this means everything to me.
You can check out the dress I'm wearing here: The Cherie Imitation Wrap Dress
You can check out Cherie's entire collection here.
fullbeauty also launched an in-house active collection this fall which is all about fit and function. I'm eager to try pieces from there as well since I am always looking for comfortable activewear. I love that fullbeauty is recognizing that plus size women are the same as their thinner sisters... we want fashion, we want to look good, we work out and we love versatility in clothing.
Yes! I feel like I'm conquering the world, one dress at a time. :-)
Please note: The dress and bag were gifted to me by fullbeauty. But all opinions in this post are my own.
"My memories are of denim. I remember being 12 in my Levi's. Wow!" Stefano Gabbana
When I think of my pre-teen days in middle school, my memories are of denim. Like Stefano Gabbana, I remember being 12 in my Levi's.
However, the difference here is that I was a plus size kid and had to "borrow" my dad's Levi's. As a child growing up in the 80's, I was thankful for the men's department because for me, the only designer brand that offered my size 36/38 bottom some jeans in the women's department was Gloria Vanderbilt. God bless that woman.
While I loved my colored Gloria Vanderbilt jeans (She was before her time with colored denim), it wasn't quite the same as wearing regular wash denim. When I put on those Levi's, I felt normal. I felt like everyone else. I felt like I didn't have to try hard to fit in fashion-wise because I was wearing what the thinner kids were wearing.

1985 - when acid wash denim was hot (and now it's back!) - I'm on the right |
A few decades later, plus size denim has evolved and there are more options. But now at a size 26, my options are still limited. And let's not even talk about the fact that I have a small waist in comparison to my bust and hips AND I have large upper calves and smaller ankles. So skinny jeans for me are no-go, even in plus sizes. Retailers seem to think all calves are one straight size. But I digress.
However, denim has played such a big part of my life because it is my go-to everyday piece. I love how I can take a pair of jeans and wear it effortlessly from day to night with a switch of shoes and an addition of a jacket or different top. Add some accessories and a hot clutch and BAM, there you go! So I refuse to give up on finding the perfect fitting pair of jeans for me. But it feels like there is still more changes to be made when it comes to offering fashion to women above a size 24.
I have made no secret for my love for Catherines. I've been a brand ambassador for them twice this year and I never endorse a brand unless I truly love the fit and quality of their clothing. They are one of two places I have been able to get denim off the rack, that fits well. And they offer up to a size 34 and 6X. Yes! So when they reached out to me to be a part of their #denimdebut campaign and gifted me some jeans, I jumped at the chance.
I opted to choose a pair of medium wash jeans from their new True Stretch line to try something new and get out of my fashion box. I usually wear dark denim because I am not comfortable showing off my lumpy thighs. But I realized I was making my lumps more visible than they actually are. We see things differently than how the world sees them, when we focus too much on the negative. This is something I am working on one day at a time.
I paired my jeans with a embellished neck tank top, black lace mixed-media jacket and suede booties, all from Catherines. I added a pop of color with this dope green bag from Fashion to Figure.
I love the silver fringe detail at the neck of this tank. It takes a simple tank and makes it FANCY. And I love all things fancy.
This jacket is the best thing I own at the moment. The sleeves have stretch so they fit my large upper arms well. And the length of the sleeves are perfect (I usually have issues with sleeves being slightly long on me). Love the mix of lace and faux leather - very chic. And this jacket looks very expensive.
Now I have yet to find a pair of jeans that fit me like a second skin but I will take what I can get. Sure, the fit isn't smooth because of the size ratio between my thighs, knees and calves. But I think I still look pretty damn good. And that's what counts.
Thanks Catherines for offering some of the best fit and quality in clothing for plus size women that I have seen to date. And that is my personal opinion (no endorsement deal at all). I think my pictures and beaming smile say it all.

Style is something each of us already has, all we need to do is find it. ~ Diane von Furstenberg
Since becoming a part of the plus size fashion world, I have been asked the same question repeatedly and it has been one of the hardest questions to answer:
"What is your style?"
Don't get me wrong, I know what I like to wear and it shows off my personality. BUT... it is hard to describe your style in a short sentence. After many years, I finally realized my style is more casual chic with an edgy touch. And I came to that answer by looking at my everyday style.
Since I was a little kid, my mom always had this saying that became our family's mantra:
"We show up and we show out."
And show up and show out, we did! Mom always made sure my brother and I looked put together, polished and stood out. I think I got my love for fashion from her. She prided herself on how great her kids looked because to her that reflected on how she was as a mother. She made sure she was the best in everything... we always had a meal on the table, we always were clean, we were hard working, polite, kind and respectful. And we always looked on point when it came to our outfits.
It is because of that, I always say I have many fashion personalities. Because my mom would dress us in all kinds of pieces and styles. And it made me feel like I could be anything and anyone I wanted to be. The sky's the limit in fashion and in life.

My brother and I - 1977 |
I love dresses, skirts, graphic tees, prints, jeans, lace, leather, sneakers... I have days where I live in a graphic tee and jeans and then there are those days I want to dress up and feel pretty. It depends on my mood. But throughout all those moods, one thing remains constant. I am always looking to be chic, pulled together, comfortable and had a little edge to my look. I tend to be on the move a lot, especially doing everyday things like going to the supermarket, spending time with my nieces, etc. So I like things simple but polished.
On a normal day, I would rock a look like this:
I'm not a trends kind of girl but I love the military trend and it's back for Fall. This entire outfit is from Lane Bryant with my sneakers from Charlotte Russe (which I scored for $10!).
I love layers and vests are great layering pieces. Add that moto element and there's my edgy touch. Tanks are another great layering piece that I buy a lot of. They work all year round, which I love because I like versatile pieces that are simple. You can shop my look here:
Belted Moto Vest // Lane Bryant // Sizes 14-28 // Click here
Skull Print Tank // Lane Bryant // SOLD OUT // Similar here (From Kohl's)
Flight Pant // Lane Bryant // 14/16 - 26/28 // Click here
Gold Sneakers // Charlotte Russe // SOLD OUT // Similar here (Dr. Jay's)
Now, on days where I want to feel extra pretty, I'd wear something like this:
I love the mix of prints in this dress and this is what I consider a statement dress. What makes it so perfect is that it is comfortable and effortless.
Dress // eShakti // SOLD OUT // Similar here
Patent leather flats // Lane Bryant // Click here
Earrings // Lane Bryant // Click here
When Eloquii extended their size range, I had to have this dress. I love leopard print and color. And it's that scuba material so it's comfy without sacrficing style.

LYDC Grey Quilted Bag // Evans // Click here

So I guess my everyday style is about doing just that. You only live once, right? Might as well make a statement and show the world who you are with style.
What is your everyday style? What do you love to wear?

"Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman." ~~ Coco ChanelThis summer has been brutal and I've been having my up and down days. Grief is no joke and add a busy schedule to that and being sick... and well, I've been having a bit of writer's/blogger's block lately. So when I got word that Catherines chose me to be one of their four style ambassadors for August, it was just the thing to get me back into the swing of things.
I love a pop of color and love to make a statement wherever I go with what I am wearing. I also like to keep it classy and stylish. Red is such a great color for that, especially in a print (y'all know how much of a print girl I am). It's a color that is definitely classy. Not to mention, it's alluring, vibrant, bold and fun. Yep, that's me in a nutshell. LOL!
So when this Catherines opportunity presented itself, I seized the opportunity to rock a red print and paint the town red my way!
Since the red print was bold, I wanted it to be the focal point of my look so I was happy that when recreating this look for the Catherines "Art of the Mix" campaign, their model was wearing black leggings and shoes.

Side by Side - Model vs Me |
I added a gold necklace, gold earrings with black stones and a pewter metallic clutch to my look. I didn't go crazy with accessories because the print top can carry itself on its own.
This look is a great day-to-evening look. During the day, I can pair it with some sandals or flats (as I did here) and then switch to some booties or wedges for evening, maybe add some statement earrings and put my hair up.
I love outfits that are effortless and versatile. I'm on the go frequently so comfort and style are both important to me. I like to keep things simple. I am a low maintenance girl.
It's worth noting that the top has no stretch to it but is lightweight and flows well with you as you move. The sleeves can be shortened by rolling them up and buttoning the tab on each sleeve. I love the envelope hem - gives this top that extra modern detail that stands out.
